FTP clients are applications using the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to exchange files over the internet or local networks. Files can be exchanged between different operating systems either directly or via an online storage account. FTP clients are the ideal way to access Online Storage accounts to manually browse the contents and store, retrieve or share individual files. When dealing with larger amounts of files and folders specialised Backup Software provides an easier way to manage data backup, synchronisation and restoration. Some FTP clients also support extended security protocols to encrypt and protect sensitive data during transfer.

Recommended: FileZilla is the FTP Client that is most compatible with DDD-Drive at the highest security level (TLS). FileZilla is the recommended access method for browsing DDD-Drive contents and manual file transfer. FileZilla is available for all operating systems and since it is an Open-Source application it can be downloaded free of charge. Step by step instructions on how to setup FileZilla to use FTP over explicit TLS are included in the DDD-Drive Instruction Manual provided with DDD-Drive packages. If you prefer to access DDD-Drive through a web browser then DDD recommends using FireFTP with Firefox.

The following list of automatic backup applications is compatible with DDD-Drive Online Storage and can be used to schedule automatic backups of files and folders to your DDD-Drive. They all work in much the same way by asking you to create backup jobs that can be either run manually or scheduled to run how ever often you require. DDD-Drive is compatible with any type of backup software with online capabilities. If you already use a backup application to backup data to an external HDD, DVD or other device then you can simply add DDD-Drive as a remote location. If you are not sure if your backup application has online capabilities contact DDD with the product name and we'll let you know. Many retail backup programs are available for a 30 day trial period so you may want to try a few and find one that suits you. Most of the programs allow you to also encrypt the data and back it up to other drives or computers on the network, external HDD, DVD and USB Sticks. Some applications can run as a service in Windows operating systems so that the backup will still run on that machine regardless of who is logged into it at the time.

Recommended: If you don't already have Backup Software DDD suggests the free version of either SyncBack or Cobian Backup 9. Their range of features, security options and simple interface make them ideal for managing your DDD-Drive backups along with those to external drives and local network computers.

Web Browsers are applications designed to display and interact with web based content. Most can also browse files and folders on local drives, networks or the internet. Most browsers require plug-ins to handle specific media or file types. Plug-in software is usually installed when visiting a website where the content requires it. Other add-ons like dictionaries and ad blockers can be added to extend the browser functionality.

With the following media players you can login to DDD-Drive and access your online media collection directly. The downloading is done by the player, all you need to is find the song or album you want to hear. All the players also play both audio and video. You can also cue video from your DDD-Drive to play directly through your player, but with larger files it's recommended to download the file before playing to avoid buffering and interruption.

The way we play music and video differs per person so which media player you choose to use will be a matter of personal preference. To play video files such as DivX and Xvid you will require specific codecs. VLC comes with codecs already built in so you can just install the player and it will play almost every video directly. Other players require codecs to either be installed individually or using a codec pack like K-Lite.

There are essentially two types of firewall, router based and application based. As the name suggests, router based firewalls reside on your local network router and protect all computers accessing the internet through that router. These can be configured by logging on to the router, usually via a web browser and allowing access to specific port numbers or ranges for particular computers on the network, identified by their unique ip address. Via the same browser interface you can also configure wireless security and create encrypted passwords and allow access to only certain MAC addresses to prevent unwanted access to or through your network. This can often be the cause for application connection issues and can make a big difference to connection speeds. Firewall applications, such as those listed below, are installed on the operating system of individual computers and control the internet access of the programs installed on that computer as well as protecting it from hacker attacks, spyware and malicious code. You can permit or deny access to individual applications and see whenever an application tries to access the internet. For the best protection it is a good idea to have an active firewall on your computer as well as on your network router.
